Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Hamas on Wednesday, March 5, urging the group to immediately release all hostages and return the bodies of those killed.
In a post on his social media platform X, Trump directly addressed Hamas, stating: “Shalom Hamas. That means hello and goodbye. You choose. Release all hostages right now, not later, and immediately return the bodies of those you have killed. If not, you’re finished.”
He went on to condemn Hamas, saying: “Only sick and deranged people hold hostages and dead bodies. You are sick and deranged.” Trump emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling this “your final warning.”
Addressing Hamas leaders, he urged them to flee: “Now is the time to leave the caves. You still have time.” He also directed a message to the people of Gaza, suggesting they had a promising future ahead—but only if Hamas complied. “A beautiful future awaits you, but not if you keep the hostages. If you do, you are dead. Make a smart decision. Release them now, or pay a very big price.”
Meanwhile, the U.S. government confirmed that it has engaged in direct secret communication with Hamas regarding the release of American hostages still held in Gaza.
A White House spokesperson declined to provide further details on the negotiations but described them as “in the interest of the American people.” The spokesperson also noted that Washington has consulted with Israel on its engagement with Hamas.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office acknowledged coordination with the U.S. and confirmed that it had conveyed its position on direct contacts with Hamas.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler received authorization from the White House to negotiate directly with Hamas. He reportedly met with Hamas leaders in Doha in recent weeks.
The talks primarily focused on securing the release of American hostages in Gaza, though broader discussions about releasing all hostages and establishing a long-term ceasefire were also reportedly raised.
